the music in my life
What has your relationship with music been like throughout your life?
music has always been apart of my life. as a kid there was always music on somewhere. at home, in the car, going on trips. i don't really know what genres were always on. i think my mom was into more current music, which was the 90s. but not grunge or alt or indie rock. my uncles seemed to gravitate towards classic rock (60s, 70s, 80s). honestly i think my mom has explored a lot of music as i've grown up. she seems to look into different music quite a bit, even today
into my teens i definitely had a whole "born in the wrong generation" era. so a lot of classic rock, some psychedelic too. honestly there's not much to talk about here. i'd have much rather found the music i listen to now back in my teens. i feel it would have been a lot more helpful in life. but so it goes
in my twenties i made a really great friend who helped break me out of my classic rock bubble. i think the band that really helped was Metric. i've really come to love them, and also enjoy Emily Haines's solo work. i was using Spotify at the time, and it seemed the discovery portion of Spotify worked quite well back then. so in between recommendations from my friend any my own discoveries, i soon learned how much wonderful music was out there
into my late twenties and into now, i've mostly gravitated around indie rock, punk, shoegaze, and psychedelic. from my teen years to late twenties, i played guitar. so i think this has a lot to do with my interest in guitar driven music. but nowadays i really would like to get a bass guitar, so this really has me paying attention to the rhythm section of music. it is always fun when the bass player is allowed to break out of their traditional rhythm duties
i'm really interested to see where music goes for me. both playing and listening to it. i think it is a beautiful form of expression, which is so core to all of us
